We couldn’t resist when our client bought a dilapidated houseboat with the romantic dream to do it up. It was on stilts in the boatyard and only had the framework. We looked to the sophisticated design of European houseboats and the colours and textures of the Murray River for inspiration.

The new cabin has 360-degrees of windows for natural light, openness and panoramic views. Meticulous spatial planning accommodates a kitchen, dining, living, reading nook, two bedrooms and a bathroom within 46 square metres. Built-in and vertical storage maximises space and function.

The palette is light in colour and nature with materials that can flex and move. Soft sage-green joinery complements the water, sky and vegetation; grey vinyl flooring has driftwood-like patterning; and caramel-coloured leather evokes the river bank. Custom timber and leather handles add playful detail and natural textiles and banksia-print cushions contribute to a space that feels at one with its environment. It really is a dreamboat.
