Our client – an outgoing, professional couple with three young children – wanted to improve the family spaces in their home. Working with the existing footprint, we redesigned the layout, and inserted beautifully crafted pieces to create a kitchen, dining and living area that is functional, attractive and social.

Stripping the space back to its bones, we relocated the kitchen and lounge areas for better functionality and flow, and raised the ceiling, window and door height to increase volume and light. The side entrance to the house is defined by a custom timber screen that separates the mudroom from the dining area without reducing light or space.

The curved island bench softens the approach into the kitchen where strong black joinery adds depth and accent to the light-coloured timber interior. Expansive bi-fold windows open to a new outdoor area for easy entertaining, and the enclosed space with built-in barbeque can be used year-round.

We selected the furnishings, lighting and artwork to add personality, texture and interest, and refreshed the front rooms in the existing home, designing a new ensuite and walk-in robe.

It’s now a light and social home that is calm and robust, able to withstand active young children, and comfortable and engaging for hosting family and friends.
